What is House of the Dragon About?

HBO is officially franchising its big hit fantasy series “Game of Thrones” by launching the prequel spinoff series “House of the Dragon,” telling the story of House Targaryen during the height of the family’s dynasty. The show depicts the beginning of the end of the great family, including its infamous war of succession for the Iron Throne.

The show “House of the Dragon” looks like “Game of Thrones,” but with all new characters and a separate timeline. Initially, it started as a concept developed by “Thrones” writer Bryan Cogman and was reworked later.

The show actually tells the origins of a great civil war of succession because the central conflict of “House of the Dragon” is about who will take over the Iron Throne after King Viserys I.

According to the history of Martin’s books, the central conflict resulted in a great civil war and tore the Targaryen family apart. House of the Dragon was set during the “Dance of the Dragons,” a period of civil war between members of the Targaryen family. The civil war occurred two centuries before the events of Martin and HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Summary

House of the Dragon is the official Game of Thrones prequel. It adapts material from hundreds of years before the events depicted in the original show. Still, the show’s creative team has emphasized that it will have its own identity and unique tone that will evolve and emerge throughout the show.

Although the show will feature all the political maneuvering, explicit bloodshed, and giant CGI dragons that Game of Thrones fans are used to by now, it will make sense to those who didn’t watch the original series.
